Marketing & Fan Engagement Leader – NBA Canada

Position Summary:

This person will lead the fan engagement and marketing team for the NBA in Canada and will be responsible for helping the NBA achieve key business priorities in-market. This role is made for a big picture thinker who both understands fan insight and can translate those insights into tangible fan engagement (e.g., live, digital and direct to fan communications or experiences). This role requires a proven team leader who is objectives-oriented and able to think holistically. This role oversees direct reports responsible for digital, social media and PR/Communications and it is the leader’s responsibility to ensure their efforts align to common objectives and make the best use of available budgets. This person is also responsible for understanding and managing the NBA’s research and insights in the region. This role has created new campaigns and programs that leverage fan insight to create new sellable assets, ultimately increasing the budget and engagement opportunities to market the NBA in Canada.  Must understand basketball culture and sponsorship marketing.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Create new ideas, platforms and campaigns that serve to engage and grow the NBA’s fan base
  • Develop objectives and design, implement and manage marketing campaigns/Fan activations to achieve those objectives
  • Lead and drive user experience, creative and media strategy across brand, event, digital/social, and partner marketing executions in Canada
  • Lead and develop a team of three and align objectives and tactics to achieve department goals
    • Develop and manage the NBA’s social and content strategy, working collaboratively with NBA Canada’s Sr. Manager, Digital Marketing to achieve audience growth and engagement objectives, including expansion of our priority segments
    • Develop and manage the NBA’s Manager of Communications to ensure earned media strategy and objectives are being met
  • Identify, understand and manage fan research and consumer insights to drive business priorities and objectives – This will include leading our efforts to identify and grow priority fan segments
  • Responsible for League Pass/ NextGen product marketing in Canada Communicate internally to drive cross-functional alignment with internal departments within the organization as needed (marketing, GP, events, etc.,) to ensure local marketing executions and campaigns are consistent with global priorities and standards
  • Responsible for the day-to-day management of the following budgets:
    • Advertising campaigns to support NBA initiatives,
    • Content for distribution on NBA social/digital platforms
    • Content-related sponsor campaigns
    • Jr. NBA marketing (with MD)
  • Ownership and management of all day-to-day marketing agency relationships
  • Serve as a trusted resource and collaborator for other departments
  • Assist Managing Director as needed on strategic projects

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • 10+ years experience working in integrated marketing, sponsorship, sales, and/or at agencies
  • Very strong people management skills
  • Expert level creative thinking skills including generating, developing and communicating new ideas or reimagining existing ideas
  • An understanding of the creative process and ability to develop and manage key agency and stakeholder relationships
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with a deep understanding of content and story-telling
  • Excellent organization skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects and budgets and prioritize effectively
  • Proficient in process and project management – ability to plan, organize, prioritize and execute strategic vision on time
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with colleagues to achieve objectives in a matrix style organization
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to make effective data-based marketing decisions
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Bachelor’s degree required
